Who We Are
We Coordinate a Humanitarian Response

Supporting displaced newcomer families and individuals in need is a powerful way to help them rebuild their lives in safety, dignity and hope. The Canadian Humanitarian Assistance Response (CHAR) is a partnership with a national network of community-based service providing organizations, providing the framework for essential supports to reach newcomers in need across the country who are making Canada their home. This collaboration offers a lifeline to those in need, fostering communities where displaced people are welcomed, supported, and empowered to rebuild their lives.
Since 2022, The Response has partnered with all levels of the Canadian government to assist displaced Ukrainians and other newcomers in need across Canada under our former iteration, Operation Ukrainian Safe Haven (OUSH). Through this collaboration, we raised over $2.6 million dollars in donations which went directly to the assistance of these populations, offering them a chance to rebuild, thrive, and contribute to their new communities across Canada.

We partner with an extensive network of local service providers Canada-wide who have direct connections with humanitarian arrivals who have limited access to support. Your donation is essential in providing relief to those who need a hand now, while empowering them to get ahead in the future as they continue to support the next generation of Canadians. Our national network is comprised of local communities, government agencies, other non-profits, and Service Provider Organizations (SPOs) to facilitate immediate assistance, including including shelter, meals, groceries, clothing, transportation, school supplies, transportation, and other immediate needs. We make a difference by connecting newcomers with the resources and support they need to rebuild their lives and and thrive in their new Canadian communities.
CHAR is an entity dedicated to coordinating the response to humanitarian emergencies affecting those accessing Canada’s Settlement Sector. We strive to create a collaborative environment where the needs, challenges, successes, trends, and predictions of humanitarian efforts can be openly discussed, providing valuable insights to policymakers. We facilitate the distribution of vital information and policy updates that impact the humanitarian movement, ensuring all parties are well-informed. Additionally, we offer a platform for receiving and equitably distributing donations across Canada. We aim to show in one site relevant information, such as FAQs, policy updates, and federal and Provincial/Territorial guidelines to support the humanitarian community.
